If you’re having trouble browsing the Apple Store online, it could be due to connectivity issues, but it’s also possible that the Apple Store will be closed while Apple updates it with new products launching later today.
It’s Wednesday, September 7, and the Apple Store is closed with just hours to go for Apple’s Far Out Keynote, which begins at 10 a.m. in California. For the launch time where you are and the products we expect the company to launch, read: iPhone 14 event: date, time and what’s launching.
The store always tends to go offline right before an event, so if you landed on this page on the day an event is scheduled, that’s why. To learn more about Apple’s next event, read: When is Apple’s next event?
In the past, it was frustrating when the store went offline as it tends to take the entire Apple website with it. The good news is that Apple has separated the Store, so it looks like it can just take those pages offline. So you can’t buy anything, but you can navigate through the site.
Why is the Apple Store offline?
There are a few reasons why the Apple Store may be offline. It could be because Apple is preparing to launch new products at an event, or it could be because Apple is about to take pre-orders for a new product.
If the site goes down on a day when Apple doesn’t have an event scheduled, it could indicate that Apple is about to put new products on sale, or that preorders for upcoming products may begin.
The company may also be about to issue press releases regarding new products that it won’t announce at an event.
However, don’t conclude that new Apple products are coming, that’s not always the case.
Sometimes the store may be down due to scheduled maintenance, or it may be due to server issues.
In this article, we’ll explain how to spot the difference between scheduled maintenance and server issues, and how to easily check the status of the Apple Store.
Why the Apple Store is offline today
The Apple Store is offline today, September 7, as (we believe) the company is gearing up to launch new iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods Pro. Here’s how to watch the Apple Event when it starts later today.
Other reasons the Apple Store could be offline
There are other reasons why the Apple Store could be down, though, so if you’re here on a day when there’s no event or no pre-orders scheduled, check out the other reasons the Apple Store could be down below.
Apple could update the online store
Before explaining how to check the status of Apple’s online store, let’s first explain the possible reasons why the store might be down.
The most exciting reason is that Apple could update the store with new products.
Apple tends to close the Apple Store as it updates the range of products available, whether that be removing old products and adjusting prices or providing the latest iPhone or iPad. The telltale difference between server issues and Apple updating the Store is the splash page you land on.
If the Apple Store is unavailable due to product changes, a message along the lines of “We’ll be back” (It used to be said, “We’ll be back soon”). If so, you don’t need to do anything else – there are no server problems, just sit quietly and wait for Apple to update the Store.
The Apple Store is offline
However, if you get a 404 error when trying to access the Apple Store (or if the site isn’t performing as you’d expect), there may be a problem with Apple’s servers. To determine if this is the problem, skip the next section and learn how to check the system status below.
You are using an outdated version of Safari or macOS
If you are having trouble accessing the Apple Store while other people have no problems, it could be due to your outdated software. If this is the case, you will see an “unsupported browser version” message when you try to visit the page on older versions.
The store also doesn’t seem to be available when any of the older versions of macOS, including macOS Yosemite or Sierra, are on other browsers. The likes of Chrome and Firefox won’t work unless you update to a recent build.
This is considered an attempt by Apple to protect its customers from potential threats.
How to Check Apple System Status
The first step to determining if the Apple Store is down (other than visiting the site itself!) is to visit Apple’s System Status website. This site shows the current status of every Apple service, from iOS device activations to iCloud and of course the Apple Online Store.
It not only informs users about potential problems with the online services, but also warns users about planned maintenance that could cause problems. It also indicates whether there have been any recent faults that have since been resolved.
If you see a message next to the Apple Online Store status, click it. It should provide more details about the problem including the duration of the outage and the issues users would have/experience.

Check crowdsourced status websites
Apple’s system status site isn’t the only place to find current information about the status of the Apple Store. Down Detector is a hugely popular third-party status website that relies on crowdsourced information from users to provide up-to-date statuses across a range of online services from PayPal to Steam and also the Apple Store.
The site allows users to report issues and review past issues that impacted the service’s performance. It also includes a handy live loss heat map so you can see if the problem is local to your city/region/country.
Another good resource is the aptly named Is It Down Right Now?. The site offers similar data to Down Detector, but also has a grid showing access speeds over the past few days.
However, it works in a different way from Down Detector in that you have to search for the service by URL and at the time of writing it checks the status of the entire Apple website, not specifically the Apple Store.
